A New Year

We left Midway Atoll on December 07. After spending a few days in Honolulu we headed home (Wisconsin) via a stop over in California. We hung out in Southern California for a few weeks to tend to dental and medical apointments--but here's the fun part--we had plenty of time to visit with family. We were visiting our grandchildren the week before Christmas when Santa made a surprise visit to their home. It seems he wanted to make sure that they had been behaving and it also gave him a chance to clarify what was on their wish list. The grandchildren were simply beside themselves with excitement. Photos are on www.wickensweb.com. We loved visiting our grandchildren's website while we were living on Midway Atoll. The videos were a particular favorite.

While we were in California we hosted an engagement party for Beth and Scott. The party was at a restaurant called "Dave and Buster's". Food was good and the entertainment was novel. Dave and Buster's is like an adult Chucky Cheese's. We are looking forward to the wedding in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 05, 2008.

We miss Midway's weather, beauty, and wildlife (human and not human) put we can still get a quick Midway "fix" by visiting Pete's blog at http://peteatmidway.blogspot.com/ . Pete is a great photographer and patiently explains the ins and outs of living and working on a remote island.

We are taking some time off from working. We've returned to our homebase in Wisconsin just in time for the coldest weather. Oh well--we have lots of indoors project to keep us busy. We hope the new year is off to a good start for you. We'll keep you posted on our next adventure. Take care and Happy New Year! Cheers!

Hawaii

Jim on Waikiki Beach. After being on Sand Island for 7 1/2 months, Jim found Hawaii's Holiday Consumerism Culture a bit overwhelming but he adjusted quickly.

We were delighted to be able to spend a couple of Hawaiian evenings with Dasha and Pete. They were married on the beach a couple of days after Jim and I left the island. They will return to Ohio for a few weeks before Pete returns to Midway to complete his contract. A beautiful couple--aren't they?

Eastern Island

Jim found a Japanese glass "rolling pin" fishing net float. Finally!

Nancy and Laysan Albatross on Eastern Island.

The beautiful Laysan Albatross on Eastern Island.

Corroding structures on Eastern Island beach.

Eastern Island once was the site of the a navy airport. All structures have been removed and the island now belongs to the wildlife.

Trashy Art

Nancy collected ceramic tile and created an art project.

The completed mosaic was hung on the wall over the dining room buffet. Title "Turtle Beach".

Desert Island or Dessert Island--you decide.

While living on small and remote Sand Island we baked for many special occasions. Only a handful of the housing options on Sand Island included a full kitchen. Fortunately our house had a kitchen. Since we both love to bake and cook--we gladly provided baked goodies for many of the island's special events. While we lived on the island we baked and decorated 20 cakes, 150 cupcakes, 40 loaves of fruit bread, 2 batches of bread pudding, 4 loaves of french bread, 8 dozen dinner rolls, and 10 dozen cookies. Recipes and photos of some of our creations are found throughout the blog.

http://www.m-w.com/ (Merriam-Webster) lists:

Desert (adjective) as: desolate and sparsely occupied or unoccupied; remote.

Dessert (noun) as: a usually sweet course or dish (as of cake, pastry or ice cream); often served at the end of a meal.
